Kimi & Chris Christopulos
A CHILDHOOD PREDICTION CAME TRUE WHEN THIS COUPLE SAID THEIR VOWS AT THE BOTANIC GARDENS LAST SEPTEMBER.
THIS STORY STARTS LONG AGO (OK, not that long) in South Dakota. Picture it: Young Kimi has developed a crush on an older boy. Chris is her sister’s age, and yet she, a precocious junior high schooler, one day points to him through a crowd and tells her nanny that is the boy she’s going to marry.
The fact is that Kimi had forgotten that fateful moment, but it made for a fun story for the nanny to remind her of at the early fall nuptials of this perhaps destined-to-be couple.
The proposal itself came nine years into the relationship.
On an ordinary Sunday morning, lounging in bed with the couple’s three dogs competing for affection, Kimi turned from wiping away a particularly wet kiss from Howard the Alaskan malamute to find Chris holding a ring. “My favorite part was he did not ask me to marry him,” she says. “He asked me to be his wife.”
Kimi says she hadn’t really spent her life dreaming about her wedding day details, so it was both fun and overwhelming to get into the process and make decisions. The couple’s style is not very formal, so they chose the natural setting of the Denver Botanic Gardens and a casual-meets-vintage theme. “For us, this was the biggest and best party we will ever throw,” says Kimi, “so creating an environment that we loved but that we also knew would suit our like-minded family and friends was a top priority.”
The Denver Botanic Gardens proved to be a show-stopping location, as guests could wander among the colorful blooms. The reception was tented and featured farm tables with bright centerpieces surrounded by amber candles, copper mugs and vintage green water glasses. The ceiling was dotted with twinkle lights and a hanging chandelier surrounded by flowers.
Kimi began her wedding day on a warm note by sneaking away to have coffee alone with her dad. Chris went golfing and had a fantastic round (Chris’s father gifted him the framed scorecard as a memento). And the special memories just kept coming. “Before Chris and I joined the reception for our first dance, we had a moment where we looked at the tent, glittering with lights, filled with our family and friends,” says Kimi. “It was quiet and a moment just for the two of us, one of the many memories we will cherish for the rest of our lives as we realized just how loved and supported we are. It was the best gift we could have asked for.”
