VOWS WITH A VIEW. That was one of the main missions for Danica Taylor and Matt Long when they set out to plan their summer 2016 wedding.
The couple had met at a hotel bar in Dallas while both were traveling for business. “He came up to talk to me, and we went out to dinner the next night, and it just had the feeling of right place, right time,” Danica (now Long) says. “His Southern accent didn’t hurt! Then we went our separate ways but kept talking and talking—and the rest is history. We were long distance for a year.”
Their engagement, on Valentine’s Day 2015, was as dramatic as their initial meeting . “We were skiing in Tahoe and we took the gondola up at the end of the day all by ourselves to see the overlook, and all of a sudden he was shuffling around and then was down on one knee!” Danica recalls. “I had no idea, and I had been carrying the backpack all day that had the ring in it. Matt said that every time I would get on the ski lift and swing that bag off my shoulder, he was afraid I would drop it down into a snowbank and we’d never find it.”
For the wedding itself, the couple—she works for Charter Communications, he’s a project engineer, and they live in Paso Robles, California—looked all around, from Mississippi (his home state), to New Orleans to California, but when they found the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera, they knew they’d hit the jackpot. “We knew we wanted a view—and who can deny the Rocky Mountains?” Danica says. “Plus, we were bringing people in from all over the country, and I wanted a one-stop shop where everyone could stay and have a great weekend.”
The ceremony was held outside, with the guests seated on a lawn, and Danica and Matt standing within a circle altar made of Western grasses. “I thought an arch would interfere with the view,” Danica says, “and I liked the fact that the circle had a very symbolic meaning in terms of marriage.”
The symbolism abounded: Matt and Danica’s parents also presented them with a wine box that held three wine bottles and accompanying letters, to be opened on their first, fifth and 10th anniversaries. It was a gift as elevated as the setting.
