Words to the wise: If you want to have an outdoor Colorado wedding on Labor Day weekend, always have a plan B. That was the POV of Adria Staky and Gavin Reed when they married last year at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker.

The couple had chosen the club because “I wanted a venue that was both indoors and outdoors,” says Adria. “I wanted our guests to be able to experience Colorado and have great mountain views—you can see all the way to Pike’s Peak and the club is kind of rustic and feels like it’s in the middle of the wilderness, with deer jumping around everywhere.”

The ceremony, held outside under a tent, took advantage of those views. But just as the 20-minute ceremony was beginning, a 20-minute thunderstorm blew in. “Right when the bridesmaids were walking out, the wind started blowing and some glass hurricanes we had on the altar table blew over and broke. But we didn’t want to delay the ceremony, so our pastor did a really good job of acknowledging the storm and carrying on. We pushed through it. We had some unity candles that Gavin’s parents had lit at their own wedding; we had to pretend to light them.”

And the absolutely perfect part? “Just as he said, ‘You may kiss the bride,’ the sun came out and it was beautiful for the rest of the day and into the night,” Adria says.

“Gavin likes to say that we weathered our first storm together right there,” she adds.

The couple met in 2013 through friends while getting their master’s degrees (his an MBA, hers a master’s in accounting) at Iowa State University and then dated long distance from Cedar Rapids to Denver before Gavin landed an engineer job at Boeing in January 2015.

After the windy wedding, the couple enjoyed the reception—inside. And the highlight of that? After dinner at food stations and speeches by Adria’s dad, the best man and maid of honor, they enjoyed four hours of dancing. “The band was called Soul X and they were phenomenal,” Adria says. “All of my friends are still talking about them.

“When the mood is right and the songs are right, it’s just great. I had a blast—I didn’t leave the dance floor for one minute.”
